A talk by CU Classics Professors Yvona Trinka-Amrhein and John Gibert, presented by the 51�Թ�� Retired Faculty Association

This remarkable story started with the excavation by the Egyptian archaeologist Basem Gehad of a grave in the ancient Egyptian city Philadelphia resulting in the discovery of one of the most significant pieces of lost Greek literature in the last 60 years. Basem Gehad found three papyri fragments and asked CU professor Yvona Trnka-Amrhein if she could translate them. Upon deciphering the fragments, she realized that they contained portions of lost plays by Euripides and turned to her colleague John Gibert, for help in the interpretation of the texts. One of the plays involves Minos, the King of Crete, and his lost son, Glaucus, who had drowned in a vat of honey.

In November of 2022, a team of archaeologists led by Basem Gehad of the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities recovered several papyri from a simple grave in the cemetery of Philadelphia in the Fayoum. The best preserved includes nearly 100 lines from two otherwise lost plays by the Athenian playwright Euripides - the most significant discovery of new tragedy in nearly 60 years. CƯ's Yvona Trnka-Amrhein, the team's papyrological expert, invited her colleague John Gibert, a specialist in Greek drama, to join her and Dr. Gehad in preparing the first edition of the text: here, for the first time in nearly 2,000 years readers will encounter gripping scenes from two plays based on little-known but intriguing incidents from the mythical careers of Dionysus' aunt Ino/Leucothea, the Cretan king Minos, and the seer Polyidus. The Ninth Annual Celia M. Fountain Symposium will introduce the discovery and explore its contexts in archaeology, literature, mythology, and vase painting.

The papyrus was officially published on August 27, 2024, in the Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik (vol. 230, pp. 1–40). It will take a while for it to reach libraries, but you may view the table of contents here.

In June, 2024, Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies hosted a two-day conference devoted to further exploration of the newly discovered text by specialists. The proceedings will eventually be published in an online, open-access book, but in the meantime, there is information about the conference here and here, including a repertory of conjectures and several pre-prints (or choose Preprints from the Publications pull-down menu on the main page).

Congratulations to Yvona Trnka-Amrhein on the receipt of two external research fellowships, one from the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington DC and one from the Loeb Foundation. These fellowships will allow her devote the next academic year to developing and finalizing her monograph, Portraits of a Pharaoh: The Sesostris Tradition in Ancient Literature and Culture, which is under contract with Oxford University Press, and to working on a variety of smaller projects she has in hand.

We are delighted to announce that Yvona Trnka-Amrhein will be joining the faculty in fall 2017.

Yvona Trnka-Amrhein (Ph.D. Harvard 2013) studies Greek literature of the Hellenistic and Imperial periods, especially the novel, biography, and history. She is particularly interested in interactions between Greek, Latin, and Egyptian literature and culture as well as the effect of empire on literature. Trained as a literary papyrologist, Dr. Trnka-Amrhein has edited several Oxyrhynchus papyri and her work is often directed to interpreting fragmentary texts on papyrus. Her current book project, Portraits of Pharaoh: the Sesostris Tradition in Ancient Literature and Culture, follows the multifaceted traditions surrounding the iconic pharaoh Sesostris through time, genres, and cultures. Future projects include a study of multi-cultural hymns in the Hellenistic world and an investigation of links between the novel, mime, and satire.
