Dr. Jack Burns at the Cape in Florida 2022

Jack Burns, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus in the 听and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physics, both at the , and is Vice President Emeritus for Academic Affairs and Research for the CU System.听

Also, Jack was recently the Principal Investigator of the NASA-funded听. In addition, he听has longstanding ties with and听served on the NASA Advisory Council from 2008-2010, Chair of the Council鈥檚 Science Committee from听2009-2010,听and听as听a member of the 2016-2017听Presidential NASA transition team.听Additionally, Jack served as the Senior Vice President of the from 2014-2017 and is Treasurer and member of the Board of Trustees for the AAS during 2024-25. Burns is an elected Fellow of the American Astronomical Society, the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the International Academy of Astronautics.

His research focuses on extragalactic astronomy and cosmology; observations of active galaxies and galaxy clusters using radio interferometers, optical telescopes, and x-ray satellites; supercomputer numerical simulations of astrophysical jets and large scale structures in the universe; and, the design of low frequency radio telescopes听on the Moon.听
